week 2
WEEK TWO
After allowing the party some time to rest at the stadium, it’s time to get a move on again. As per your mysterious benefactor’s (?) recommendation, the party will be splitting up into two groups, with one group traveling west to a hospital, and the other traveling east to a mall.
if you chose hospital...
To get to the hospital, characters will need to venture into more densely populated areas of Los Angeles – and that means they’ll be coming into contact with a higher amount of zombies. The hordes that roam here descend upon any living creature that makes too much noise, so you might witness an unlucky squirrel or cat get hunted down by these roaming threats. The bad news is that they’ll sprint full speed at you if they happen to catch sight – the good news is that they’re not very coordinated at pack hunting, and you may be able to outsmart them by weaving through the streets.
In a stroke of bad luck, Shoko Ieiri attracts the attention of a horde, forcing the party off considerably off course. Temporarily, hopefully. Detour!
Thankfully, there are several methods of getting to the front door of the location – parkouring atop or traversing inside connected buildings, for example. The zombies aren't the only thing that can kill you, though, if you're not careful; while traveling to the hospital, Auch Aubrey slips and falls to his death off a building. Remember Dr. Bei's warning, about not getting too far away from each other? The party will realize if they get too far away from his body (specifically the bracelet), it'll start feeling like their own bracelet is burning them at the wrist. Better go back — and either lug his body around, or lop off the bracelet somehow....
The area this group will travel through has many tourist attractions – antique stores, the Natural History Museum, old-school theaters, for example. For our sword wielders, there are some dated ones among the antique stores and museums; they're dusty, but they'll get the job done. There are other cool artifacts to "borrow" at these places, too, not to mention some history of what the world was like before all this happened.
And at the theaters? There's candy, DVDs, and cardboard cutouts from a variety of movies that were out when the fall of society came. Maybe there are minions there.
Once at the hospital, the party will find that there are a massive amount of zombies that have been trapped inside. Many are former patients or hospital staff, so several are wielding things like scalpels or crutches, and they are just smart enough to attack with them. To get around the facility to find the medical supplies you need, you’ll need to find a way to either distract the zombies, stealthily make your way around, or, you know, eliminate all of them.
As for scavenging, the hospital is surprisingly well stocked, as the high zombie count has made it hard to raid. Characters will be able to find bandages, medicine, surgical tools, and more, if they look close enough.
Of this group, Satoru Gojo and Mark Grayson are infected.

if you chose mall...
To get to the mall, characters will need to travel underground through the subway tunnels. None of the trains are in operation anymore, so they won’t be at risk of getting flattened – but the aged husks of the vehicles are still down here, rotting away. In some tunnels, it will be impossible to go around them, and you know the saying: sometimes the only way forward is through. Inside the trains, some doors that connect the cars are operational, while others are too rusted to move, forcing characters to climb atop the train to progress to the next car. It'll be a taxing trial, made worse by the fact that in these train cars, there are both regular corpses as well as zombified ones. The unpredictable nature of the functioning or non-functioning doors will making escaping the zombies difficult — characters will need to either stand their ground, or climb up to safety if they find themselves at a dead end.
Exiting the subways leaves one last test for this group: the stairs are collapsed! The light of outside shines through what is essentially a giant hole in the ceiling leading to street level. There's about a one story gap between the end point of the subways and the upper ground of the street, so characters will have to get creative with getting everyone up — using train cables? Throwing each other? Human pyramid?
Once at the mall just outside, the party will find that while there doesn’t seem to be a massive horde, there’s another problem: the first floor of the mall, which is below street level, is completely flooded. They’ll have to swim across the distance to the escalators, find a way to get across using debris, or some secret third thing. There are waterlogged zombies floating about in the water as well, who will swim violently towards you once they hear ripples in the water — they’re not subtle about going after you, and will thrash and splash and immediately let you know where they are. They're like people sized piranhas. Scary!
At one point, Sigewinne is pulled underwater by a zombie, and comes close to drowning.
As for scavenging, once they’ve scaled the escalator, they’ll find the second floor of the mall has definitely had its fair share of visitors, but there are still many useful things to find. There are electronic stores that have batteries and walkie talkies, clothing stores (like Hot Topic) that have some extra clothes lying about, and of course, the food court, where you’ll find canned and preserved foods from a variety of different cuisines.
Of this group, Suzuha Amane is infected.

rendezvous
After several days apart, characters will be able to meet back up at a spacious park in the northern part of the city. There are park ranger staff cabins that can be converted into temporary shelters with effort — and the area has a lightly wooded trail, which will make camping outside slightly more safe than if you were plain out in the open.
It’d be a good time to treat the wounded with the new medical supplies, and chow down on the food that’s been collected. Is there someone among the group who’s medical advice can be trusted? Is there someone who might be good at rationing or cooking the food? Everyone’s role in the party should start to become clearer.
There are probably a lot of things to discuss: what will you do with the infected? What's the deal with the bracelets? Reality of how dangerous this mission is will be setting in far too quickly.
Most annoyingly… after all that, some characters will find that moving north has caused their bracelets to inexplicably magnetize together at times, perhaps in response to everything that's happened. Due to this, you might need to help feed each other, or sleep next to a stranger. Hopefully you don't get stuck to someone you totally hate.

[Kotoha, dusting herself off and straightening a bit as she squints up at that hole, nods.]
Alright alright, this is what you brought me along for, right? So what do we think? Ladder? Rope? Trampoline?
[Well, at least she's confident about it.]
b. mall - i hate the thought of water piranha zombies
[Kotoha has, because she doesn't want to swim yet, made herself a pool floatie. One of these guys. She's floating along, making herself little waves as she drifts along, and is so focused on that that she does not notice the zombies in the water.
They sure notice her, though.
A rotting, clawed hand shoots out of the water, and Kotoha capsizes with a startled yelp.
SPLASH.]
c. rendezvous - up close and personal.
[Kotoha, voice ranging between extremely hoarse or totally gone, is meandering over to your character to see how they are!
... That's when the magnetism kicks in, and she topples as the bracelets click together.
Face in the dirt, Kotoha just kind of lifts her hand, middle finger up. At the world, in general.]
d. wildcard
[listen, there are so many good options here, i want to do a little bit of everything. feel free to hit me with anything!!]

[Ninety-Nine hasn't seen Kotoha's powers in action yet, so she doesn't know exactly what the ability entails. She's really only thinking of what they might be able to bring with them, not that it might be less strenuous on Kotoha's already exhausted vocal cords.
She looks around at the cavernous terminal.] Are there cables here? Wire. [She needs something sharper... anything to make cutting up all the things they need to slice easier.]

[ Things got chaotic fairly quickly and Haru has been putting her (slightly dented) baseball bat to good use, but as it becomes apparent that the zombies are going to crowd them before they can get them all to climb up to run to the next car--
And she bites her lip, but then the next minute, blue flames are flickering around her and her entire attire is changing. ]
Please get down!!
[ Because she's ripping off her mask and with a sound like shattering glass, some kind of massive figure in a ballgown is manifesting in front of her and flinging out some kind of psychic attack to throw the zombies back.
Well, that's fine? Maybe? Haru can't quite explain in the moment but she's ushering you on. ]
[ MALL - SUPPLY GATHERING ]
[ You know, her attire hasn't changed, but it's gone a long way in certain parkour moves and she's become a lot more agile when it comes to actual combat. But now? Now, she's coming out of Hot Topic with several Generic Anime hoodies draped over her shoulder and some leggings and fishnets (maybe to catch actual fish??? one day???) and other garments, nodding to a group member. ]
Should we aim for the food court next? I'd like to make sure we have enough supplies to take back to the others. I have to admit, I'm starting to miss my own home-grown vegetables, though...
[ Girl it hasn't been THAT long ]
[ RENDEZVOUS ]
[ And we've done it! We've made it! Haru looks maybe a little traumatized from Things (can't imagine what), but she's got an axe she's been carrying around now and she'll be busy helping out where she can. Need someone to stir something? Watch something boil? Cut things up? Bring more bandages? Please make use of her, she will ask you.
Or, alternatively, get stuck to her, at which point she looks down at her hand, then looks up at you, and sighs. ]
I'm very sorry.
[ As though this is her fault. ]

[Subway]
Leon's been keeping towards the back for the most part to take out ones that are catching up to them with the ranged weapons he has, but the thing is he knows the signs of Arts when he sees them.
... Or at least something similar enough to the magic system of his world that he doesn't even question it for a second when Haru begins to spark blue flames.
He ducks instantly, twisting his head around in time to see the figure absolutely obliterate the zombies behind them. Whatever placement he'd been trying to assign Haru on the notes they found earlier, he's quickly reassign her to the group of heavy hitters.
No questions need to be asked about the summon, because usually Leontuzzo is capable of something similar himself. He'll scramble up the side of the car to get out of the way before the sound brings more of them, and calls out to her. ]

Haru comes out of Hot Topic and Sigewinne meanders her way out of Radio Shack, two oversized walkie talkes in her hands. She's never actually used one before but they look a little like the phone back in Dr. Bei's house, so maybe they'll see some use here? ]
It would be nice to have something fresh to feed everyone instead of relying on prepacked foods. [ All those additives can't be good for the body long-term.... ] Maybe we'll get lucky and pass through a farm next instead of old buildings.

[When the hoard is alerted it feels like a nightmare. As they are encroached upon he attempts to use his Halovian powers. And it works... slightly... Not enough to stop them all.
And then something even worse happens... One of their own just falls to their death. It happens so quickly that he doesn't even have a chance to completely unfurl the wings at his waist. Not that such a thing would do any good. These wings can't fly. But the instinct is there...
He's been trying to use his halo to emit a calming aura. That only works when he himself is calm. And when Auch goes off the ledge there is nothing calm about what's being given off. He closes off his connection with the others swiftly and makes his way to the ledge where Auch fell. But there is naught to be done about the scene that lies upon the ground below.
A life, so quickly, snuffed out. The candle of life doused by a great storm.]
Oh, Triple-Faced Soul, please grant eternal rest upon this soul and let Your perpetual light shine upon them. May their final rest be a peaceful one. Oh, Triple-Faced Soul, bless us all with peace and strength so that we may triumph even in the face of this tragic loss.
B - Ode to Harmony
[The hospital is another nightmare, full of zombies. He can calm a few at a time. But it's getting more and more difficult as time goes on. Each wave he emits takes a toll. And if he can't keep his composure and a calm sense of mind then all of this becomes less effective.
He just has to keep this going until supplies are collected and then they can make a run for it.
But he cannot... One of those boys eager for fighting takes his place so he can slink into the room where people are packing supplies. His body is exhausted. So much so that he can't even keep his wings wrapped around his waist. They unfurl slightly as he slumps against the wall falling into a heap beside him.
He just needs a moment and then he can keep going. So the others don't have to suffer.]
C - Communion
[They have supplies but the cost feels terribly great. After all, they lost one of their own. And again he has to puzzle over his purpose here. He can't cook. He certainly has no medical knowledge.
He's exhausted right down to the marrow of his flightless bone but... Surely the mood is a bit dour considering some of the events that took place. Sunday moves to the center of their little encampment and again clasps his hands together calling upon his natural born talents. Normally, in times of duress he'd hum the melody his mother used to sing him and Robin. But today he opts for one of Robin's songs To help ease the sense of calm he must admit from his Halo to help sooth the others.
Maybe this is why he's been brought here... In this small way he can ease suffering. A very small and miniscule version of his dream but it is something.]

[Bodies litter the cars past the grime and blood smeared on the windowpanes of the train they squeeze past in as much silence as they can muster. As of now, nothing has yet to stir, which is a small mercy. But their luck soon runs dry when the tunnel narrows, leaving them with little to no choice but to go through the car before them.
Reiju scans the scene from the rear as the group consider the rusted door that will take them inside. Quietly, she addresses the person nearest to her:]
How many of them do you think there are?
B. First-floor swim
[Reiju has no qualms about swimming through a pool of corpses. After what happened at the subway, however, it would behoove them to give each and every body they encounter a cursory glance; hence, she stands at the edge of the water with her gaze pointed at the nearest waterlogged body, before she fixes it sidelong at her nearest companion, questioning.
Thoughts?]
C. Rendezvous
[Reiju leaves the preparation and distribution of food to those with more experience, opting instead to help provide basic treatment. She's no doctor, but she can patch up various scrapes well enough. Her motions are practiced as she wraps a bandage or its approximate equivalent around someone's injury, and she pulls back to sit on her haunches once that's finished, smiling wryly.]
How are you feeling?
a.
Ughhhh.
She can't help the way her brain works, though, and rattles off before she can think about it:]
If this were Tokyo, about one hundred forty to one hundred sixty passengers per train car at peak times. Not sure how many train cars, though.

[ So... all of this is pretty creepy. And not that Mark has ever undervalued the ability to fly, but right now — looking down at all of these zombies, there are so many of them — he's really, really thankful he can do that.
And feeling a lot less great that most of his companions here can't fly, but that's where he comes in, right? Right.
So Mark is kind of scouting and doing patrol both, not so high that his bracelet burns him, but not so low that any zombies can reach out and grab him. But when a stray one manages to slip in behind someone he'll be right there to swoop in and scoop you up to safety. ]
Whoa! Close one, huh?
[ Accompanied by a nervous laugh, like it's now really setting in on him just how dangerous this is, but he's still trying to keep the mood light. ]
ii. hospital (post-infection)
[ Dr. Bei was a person. She may be a zombie now, but she was a person. A person who had the hope and ingenuity to try to find a cure, and who put her trust in him — in all of them — to see it through. And any of the zombies here could be just like her, every single one of them deserving a chance to go back to their normal lives.
And right now, with the spot where his neck and shoulder meet burning and in incredible pain, Mark just doesn't. fucking. care.
He hasn't picked up any weapons in their time here so far. He's a superhero, he's Invincible, he doesn't need one. But here he's got an IV pole in hand, wielding it with enough force to take a zombie's head off, impale them — whatever. It doesn't matter. He's clearing a path for whoever's with him.
It's fine. It's fine. They'll get what they need and then they'll all get out of there and it will be fine. ]
iii. rendezvous
[ He just... he needs a bit of space.
Not long after they reach the park a bandaged Mark quietly slips away. Not far, just out to the start of the wooded area. For a moment he stands there, staring. Then he sits, holding his knees to his chest. And at some point maybe he buries his head into it.
Now that he's off autopilot, no longer smashing through zombies and keenly aware of the pain from his wound, he has too many thoughts — and some of them he's maybe inadvertently saying out loud. ] [ It might be kind of uncomfortable if your bracelet got stuck to that of an infected guy who is showing signs of fever and is maybe not all here at the moment, wouldn't it? ]
iv. wildcard
[ hey hey! i'm down for pretty much whatever, but over the coming weeks(/month?) looking to play with mark turning slowly with ramping aggression in particular, to the point that he realizes this isn't sustainable and has to ask somebody to put him down, because nobody needs a flying zombie out here. let's work to make things as painful as possible so we can strike when the vibes are right!! ]
teenry —
Nevermind where that horde came from. It doesn't matter. Any one of them could have screwed up— it doesn't matter.
What does matter is they're in trouble, and from above he can see a couple of zombies descending on Henry, and it's all Mark knows to do but to dive right in. ]
Henry—!
[ Nevermind that they're fast; he's fast, too. Nevermind that sound attracts them; he can fly, it doesn't matter. So he dives in, elbowing one out of the way and reaching out to pick Henry up, take him to safety. He's a good kid — he wants go back, stop someone from getting hurt, and he can't do that if he gets bit—
Nevermind the burning sensation coming from where neck meets shoulder, from where he'd flown into a zombie's open jaws at just the right moment for it to take a chunk out of him. He can worry about that later — making sure Henry is okay comes first. ]

closed to shoko
The wall that he's continually been climbing up, chasing the horizon, has always pushed him to grow stronger and stronger so he never reaches it. It's why he's never been afraid of reaching his limits, because he is, quite literally, limitless. That he's noticed some sort of cap on his cursed energy since he arrived here isn't all that concerning, so long as he's efficient with its use and replenishment. He might burn through it faster than he's used to, but that only means he needs to be exacting. Precise. He can. He will be. This is still nothing.
Even more than having something to prove to himself, he has someone to keep safe. Despite the difficulty they've had, they make it to the hospital, with further yet zombies to cut a path through, ones that seem even more aggressive and coordinated. Still nothing, he thinks, and he continues to fight, to push, I have to get home, I have to go back. He cuts deep into the horde to give the others the chance to slip down a blocked corridor to a supply room, intending to hold off the zombies until they make good headway. In, out, red, blue, output, amplification, reverse —
Arm outstretched, he fires off another blast of red energy to obliterate horde, while a stray slips free and lunges for him. He doesn't think twice about it, because Limitless will stop it. Everything seems like it's going well, until it isn't, the zombie's jaw snapping through Limitless like it's nothing. A second it all it takes — he pivots, slamming a fist through the zombie's chest with a repelling force, but not before the monster sinks its teeth into him, skin and blood and bone splintering beneath the strength of its jaw. ]
Shit —
[ Behind his eyelids, it's like he can see the flash of the Inverted Spear of Heaven all over again. He thought he was safe, he thought he was —
Again, just like that fateful day, his mind hones in one objective: survive. Heedless of the blinding pain from his ruined arm, he wheels back towards the group, shouting: ]
Shoko! I need you!
[ His own RCT is ineffective, so he expects hers will be, too. But that's not what he needs from her right now. ]

the way i saw corn and thought it was a minions prompt
Next to Hella is Sigewinne, garbed in a rather unflattering shirt, grabbed from one of the lower shelves in Hot Topic after her untimely almost-demise in the zombie infested waters. (It was a nice color and the imagery had been evocative. Sometimes when you see things differently from humans, it's great for you and terrible for everyone else.) At least she doesn't seem to mind the sad globs of soggy corn that keep landing on her. She hasn't showered in days and there's a healthy layer of grime and dust covering her from head to toe so really, what's a little extra corn? ]
That's okay. Making sure you get enough to eat is much more important.
[ Though is just the corn going to be enough.... ]

[ Here again. He really hoped he would never be here again. It's a different station, of course; none of the destinations on the signs are places he's been, and none of the dirty walkways are ones he's walked down. Standing in the filthy interior corridor of a derelict subway car, hearing shuffling footsteps and grunts and groans that are only only nearly human - he's been here before. The familiar stink of corpses fills his nostrils, and only a learned tolerance of it keeps him from dry heaving where he stands.
He's wrenched open the door to the next car with a rusty pipe. It was jammed shut with rust and unidentifiable debris, but he managed to open it. Henry stands back to let everyone else pass through, both out of politeness and an understanding that they're all much stronger than him - but as the last person goes ahead of him, he hesitates at the threshold, lifting an unsteady hand to his temple. His skin's gone pale, and he very much looks like he's about to throw up. ]
flooded mall
We can't swim through that...
[ so Henry declares as they stand at the precipice of the escalators, staring tiredly at the expanse of opaque brown water between them and the way to the next floor. It's not just that it's filthy, although that's also a concern - it's the fact that they can't see through it. The bloated bodies floating at the surface are as still as the rest of the litter dotting the water, but he doesn't believe for a second that they're truly gone.
Time for some creative problem-solving!! ]
rendezvous
[ hello. it's Henry, looking more tired and significantly more dirty than before, but hey, he's got a backpack now, which means he no longer has limited inventory space! What a concept. ]
... Do you ...want some water?
[ there's a lot going on, but it's important to stay hydrated... something he's not used to dealing with, frankly. ]
Subway
This is not the first time that Leontuzzo has been in a life or death situation, and weirdly enough he's hoping it won't be the last, but it doesn't make the situation any less tense for him. The smell of rot all around them is stomach-churning, and each shuffled sound and groan of meta has the ears on top of his head twitching and turning this way and that.
It's this hyper vigilance that has him moving either between point or rear guard at any given point in time, to make sure nothing surprises them, or nothing takes them by surprise from behind.
He's doing the latter at the moment, which is why he's the next to last one through the door, and able to see as Henry hesitates to follow. As he stops, looking over Henry's shoulder for a moment to make sure they can afford this conversation, the clear line of tattered subway seats behind makes him decide it's fine for just a moment.
Leon's voice is low and calm when he finally speaks. ]

night time training
But regardless of how she should act, she can't force herself to sleep (without that causing more problems than solutions), so she just goes for short little walks until her mind eases enough to let her at least rest her eyes.
It hasn't occurred to her (thanks to tiredness) to check and make sure everyone's with the group when she sits up, she's just doing another short walk--until she hears the scuffling of someone... ... exercising?
It's not a very big surprise, in the sense that she'd seen him at the mall, and the shape of the muscles through the shirt had startled her then, but all the same, seeing them in all their lovingly trained glory still gives her pause.
But not enough pause because the bracelet does indeed decide to be a Fucker and Haru stumbles forward with a yelp as it clicks together with Soujuurou's.
Sorry, buddy. Sorry to interrupt your squats. ]

LATE WEEK 2
Well, not a miracle, but something beautiful nonetheless. An enormous group of fireflies can be spotted just outside where the group has made camp, twinkling and bright with a warm glow. They're completely harmless and simply beautiful to look at; maybe some members of the camp know that if you catch one, it's said that you can make a single wish!
Moreover, if the fireflies are followed, survivors will eventually be led to a few bushes bearing ripe summer berries.
Blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries can all be found in limited quantities around the field. Hurry up and get some before they're all gone! Share with the other survivors, or maybe mix them with some of the existing rations to make something even more delicious?

Oh! If you catch one, then you can make a wish!
[Immediately walks over and tries to catch a passing firefly with two cupped hands. Using his powers is cheating, you know!
Later, when they actually find the glut of fresh berries ripe for the picking, Henry's eyes widen.]
Wow. I've never picked wild berries before.
[Because they're definitely picking these berries, right?]
