week 2
WEEK TWO
After allowing the party some time to rest at the stadium, it’s time to get a move on again. As per your mysterious benefactor’s (?) recommendation, the party will be splitting up into two groups, with one group traveling west to a hospital, and the other traveling east to a mall.
if you chose hospital...
To get to the hospital, characters will need to venture into more densely populated areas of Los Angeles – and that means they’ll be coming into contact with a higher amount of zombies. The hordes that roam here descend upon any living creature that makes too much noise, so you might witness an unlucky squirrel or cat get hunted down by these roaming threats. The bad news is that they’ll sprint full speed at you if they happen to catch sight – the good news is that they’re not very coordinated at pack hunting, and you may be able to outsmart them by weaving through the streets.
In a stroke of bad luck, Shoko Ieiri attracts the attention of a horde, forcing the party off considerably off course. Temporarily, hopefully. Detour!
Thankfully, there are several methods of getting to the front door of the location – parkouring atop or traversing inside connected buildings, for example. The zombies aren't the only thing that can kill you, though, if you're not careful; while traveling to the hospital, Auch Aubrey slips and falls to his death off a building. Remember Dr. Bei's warning, about not getting too far away from each other? The party will realize if they get too far away from his body (specifically the bracelet), it'll start feeling like their own bracelet is burning them at the wrist. Better go back — and either lug his body around, or lop off the bracelet somehow....
The area this group will travel through has many tourist attractions – antique stores, the Natural History Museum, old-school theaters, for example. For our sword wielders, there are some dated ones among the antique stores and museums; they're dusty, but they'll get the job done. There are other cool artifacts to "borrow" at these places, too, not to mention some history of what the world was like before all this happened.
And at the theaters? There's candy, DVDs, and cardboard cutouts from a variety of movies that were out when the fall of society came. Maybe there are minions there.
Once at the hospital, the party will find that there are a massive amount of zombies that have been trapped inside. Many are former patients or hospital staff, so several are wielding things like scalpels or crutches, and they are just smart enough to attack with them. To get around the facility to find the medical supplies you need, you’ll need to find a way to either distract the zombies, stealthily make your way around, or, you know, eliminate all of them.
As for scavenging, the hospital is surprisingly well stocked, as the high zombie count has made it hard to raid. Characters will be able to find bandages, medicine, surgical tools, and more, if they look close enough.
Of this group, Satoru Gojo and Mark Grayson are infected.

if you chose mall...
To get to the mall, characters will need to travel underground through the subway tunnels. None of the trains are in operation anymore, so they won’t be at risk of getting flattened – but the aged husks of the vehicles are still down here, rotting away. In some tunnels, it will be impossible to go around them, and you know the saying: sometimes the only way forward is through. Inside the trains, some doors that connect the cars are operational, while others are too rusted to move, forcing characters to climb atop the train to progress to the next car. It'll be a taxing trial, made worse by the fact that in these train cars, there are both regular corpses as well as zombified ones. The unpredictable nature of the functioning or non-functioning doors will making escaping the zombies difficult — characters will need to either stand their ground, or climb up to safety if they find themselves at a dead end.
Exiting the subways leaves one last test for this group: the stairs are collapsed! The light of outside shines through what is essentially a giant hole in the ceiling leading to street level. There's about a one story gap between the end point of the subways and the upper ground of the street, so characters will have to get creative with getting everyone up — using train cables? Throwing each other? Human pyramid?
Once at the mall just outside, the party will find that while there doesn’t seem to be a massive horde, there’s another problem: the first floor of the mall, which is below street level, is completely flooded. They’ll have to swim across the distance to the escalators, find a way to get across using debris, or some secret third thing. There are waterlogged zombies floating about in the water as well, who will swim violently towards you once they hear ripples in the water — they’re not subtle about going after you, and will thrash and splash and immediately let you know where they are. They're like people sized piranhas. Scary!
At one point, Sigewinne is pulled underwater by a zombie, and comes close to drowning.
As for scavenging, once they’ve scaled the escalator, they’ll find the second floor of the mall has definitely had its fair share of visitors, but there are still many useful things to find. There are electronic stores that have batteries and walkie talkies, clothing stores (like Hot Topic) that have some extra clothes lying about, and of course, the food court, where you’ll find canned and preserved foods from a variety of different cuisines.
Of this group, Suzuha Amane is infected.

rendezvous
After several days apart, characters will be able to meet back up at a spacious park in the northern part of the city. There are park ranger staff cabins that can be converted into temporary shelters with effort — and the area has a lightly wooded trail, which will make camping outside slightly more safe than if you were plain out in the open.
It’d be a good time to treat the wounded with the new medical supplies, and chow down on the food that’s been collected. Is there someone among the group who’s medical advice can be trusted? Is there someone who might be good at rationing or cooking the food? Everyone’s role in the party should start to become clearer.
There are probably a lot of things to discuss: what will you do with the infected? What's the deal with the bracelets? Reality of how dangerous this mission is will be setting in far too quickly.
Most annoyingly… after all that, some characters will find that moving north has caused their bracelets to inexplicably magnetize together at times, perhaps in response to everything that's happened. Due to this, you might need to help feed each other, or sleep next to a stranger. Hopefully you don't get stuck to someone you totally hate.

[ So... all of this is pretty creepy. And not that Mark has ever undervalued the ability to fly, but right now — looking down at all of these zombies, there are so many of them — he's really, really thankful he can do that.
And feeling a lot less great that most of his companions here can't fly, but that's where he comes in, right? Right.
So Mark is kind of scouting and doing patrol both, not so high that his bracelet burns him, but not so low that any zombies can reach out and grab him. But when a stray one manages to slip in behind someone he'll be right there to swoop in and scoop you up to safety. ]
Whoa! Close one, huh?
[ Accompanied by a nervous laugh, like it's now really setting in on him just how dangerous this is, but he's still trying to keep the mood light. ]
ii. hospital (post-infection)
[ Dr. Bei was a person. She may be a zombie now, but she was a person. A person who had the hope and ingenuity to try to find a cure, and who put her trust in him — in all of them — to see it through. And any of the zombies here could be just like her, every single one of them deserving a chance to go back to their normal lives.
And right now, with the spot where his neck and shoulder meet burning and in incredible pain, Mark just doesn't. fucking. care.
He hasn't picked up any weapons in their time here so far. He's a superhero, he's Invincible, he doesn't need one. But here he's got an IV pole in hand, wielding it with enough force to take a zombie's head off, impale them — whatever. It doesn't matter. He's clearing a path for whoever's with him.
It's fine. It's fine. They'll get what they need and then they'll all get out of there and it will be fine. ]
iii. rendezvous
[ He just... he needs a bit of space.
Not long after they reach the park a bandaged Mark quietly slips away. Not far, just out to the start of the wooded area. For a moment he stands there, staring. Then he sits, holding his knees to his chest. And at some point maybe he buries his head into it.
Now that he's off autopilot, no longer smashing through zombies and keenly aware of the pain from his wound, he has too many thoughts — and some of them he's maybe inadvertently saying out loud. ] [ It might be kind of uncomfortable if your bracelet got stuck to that of an infected guy who is showing signs of fever and is maybe not all here at the moment, wouldn't it? ]
iv. wildcard
[ hey hey! i'm down for pretty much whatever, but over the coming weeks(/month?) looking to play with mark turning slowly with ramping aggression in particular, to the point that he realizes this isn't sustainable and has to ask somebody to put him down, because nobody needs a flying zombie out here. let's work to make things as painful as possible so we can strike when the vibes are right!! ]
teenry —
Nevermind where that horde came from. It doesn't matter. Any one of them could have screwed up— it doesn't matter.
What does matter is they're in trouble, and from above he can see a couple of zombies descending on Henry, and it's all Mark knows to do but to dive right in. ]
Henry—!
[ Nevermind that they're fast; he's fast, too. Nevermind that sound attracts them; he can fly, it doesn't matter. So he dives in, elbowing one out of the way and reaching out to pick Henry up, take him to safety. He's a good kid — he wants go back, stop someone from getting hurt, and he can't do that if he gets bit—
Nevermind the burning sensation coming from where neck meets shoulder, from where he'd flown into a zombie's open jaws at just the right moment for it to take a chunk out of him. He can worry about that later — making sure Henry is okay comes first. ]
slams in here
It's a different kind of adrenaline that shoots through him, harsh and like lightning strikes through his veins, and tension mingled with fear and the deep instinctual desire to survive. None of that matters, though. His powers might toss aside a few undead bodies, but there are too many, and a couple grab at him with surprising strength. They yank him to the side, and he sees gnashing, rotted teeth in his vision—
And then there's Mark. Suddenly, he's there, and Henry's being lifted, and he can't know that's happening until they're practically wheeling away from the "danger". He opens his eyes, though, and sees... red.]
M-mark?!
[Is that- a bite? No. It can't be. He doesn't-]
no subject
Don't worry, I've got you. [ His own voice doesn't come out as calm and reassuring as he'd thought, but it's just the adrenaline, he's sure of it. It's okay, though. Close calls can get to superheroes too, right? ] Here, let me just...
[ He spots a nearby empty rooftop, not too high off of the ground, not too far away from the others. They can just... stay there for a moment, because something is burning, but it's... probably just the adrenaline. That's why he's starting to feel a little woozy, like he needs to sit for a moment. Because of the adrenaline.
Mark sets Henry down, tries for a smile, ] Are you alright? [ and barely gets the last word out before he's stumbling to sit down. Because he sees the red now too, and it's
... at least not on Henry. ]
no subject
The red. The blood.
He really was bitten.]
No, no, no...
[He couldn't have been. Because of trying to save him? That's-]
Why did you do that?

iiia!
It's easy to track him down, perhaps especially because he's in such a state. Hella peeks around a tree to get a better look, making sure to keep distance so as not to spook him. It's then that she hears his mumbling. ]
What do you mean, "always get better?"
[ Her words aren't cutting or suspicious — clearly, she didn't come here with the idea in mind to admonish or interrogate him. But she must have sought him out for some specific reason, given the fact she followed him into the woods at night.. ]
no subject
Mark looks back at her over his shoulder. Relaxes after a moment. It's just Hella, he knows Hella, Hella is great. She isn't sneaking up on him. He isn't doing anything stupid— It's not like it could get worse, could it? ]
Um. [ His throat bobs in another nervous swallow, whether directed at himself (it absolutely could get worse) or at her (hi, uh, didn't see you there). ] I mean I... always get better. I've been hurt pretty bad before, but I've always healed up. So... the same thing is going to happen here.
[ But there's a lack of focus in his eyes, like he both sees her and sees right past her at the same time. Is he trying to convince her? Himself? It probably doesn't matter, because he's going to overcome this, like he does everything. Yup. Yup, that's what's going to happen, as a shiver wracks his body. ]
no subject
You know, I'm like that, too. There's pretty much nothing I can't come back from.
[ She nods once in understanding, thinking that she understands what he's trying to get at. It's hard for him to understand that he's been hurt in a way he never has, right? She'd be afraid of it, too. But she wants to believe he'll get better — so that she can believe she would get better, as well.
After some silence that she lets hang in the air, staring off into the dark of the forest, she nudges him with her shoulder. ]
Wanna know my motto? What don't kill you makes you stronger, and since I can't die, I'm always getting stronger.
[ Usually, when she tells people her motto, is with an air of haughtiness and pride, but here, she wields it like a soft blanket, draping it over his shoulders in an attempt at comfort. If he always bounces back, then perhaps this is just going to make him stronger, in the end. ]
I'll graciously let you borrow it, until you're feeling better.
[ Which will happen, surely... it has to. ]
no subject
And besides, it's Hella. She nudges him and he plays into it, swaying to the side before returning upright with a soft laugh. Nudging her back. ]
Thank you. I'll, um. I'll take good care of it.
[ He could sound a lot more certain than he actually does, but... No, it is scary. And even though he knows — he knows — he'll get over this, that this infection will pass and he'll be fine again sooner rather than later, there is that lingering what if.
So... what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. She drapes it over him, and he secures it over his person, holding onto it for dear life. ]
I'm not dead yet, right? [ But I can die. ] I mean, I've been beaten really badly before. Like... really badly. [ It isn't funny, but there's a little smile on his lips as he says it. Maybe it is kind of funny? Everything he's been through, and he's still here. ] I guess I am stronger because of it. Otherwise why would I still be here? Why else would I have been chosen?
[ He's defended Dr. Bei from the beginning, and even now... They've gotta get the job done. They've gotta. ]
I'll let you know when you can have your motto back... Should only take a couple of days. A week tops.
[ That's how it has to be. It just has to, even as he shivers again. ]

Even as she starts making her way to one of the cabins, she’s almost trying to talk herself out of it. But it’s then that she spots Mark sitting alone at the edge of the woods, and she stops right in her tracks. Fine. She can sit, she can rest, but she doesn’t have to be alone about it. And maybe… maybe he could use some company too.
She changes course to quietly approach, blinking a little once she realizes he’s speaking out loud to himself. Something about seeing him there like that, hearing him say that, makes her chest ache something fierce.
She settles down to carefully take a seat in the dirt there at his left—so that it’s her whole and healthy right arm there at his side, not the bandaged up, half-missing wreck of the other (does she feel like she has to hide it? It’s stupid)—and is quiet for just a moment before speaking up.]
You aren’t letting anyone down. I heard… you helped protect everyone back there.
[Not in much detail, but she’d heard some from the other group mention running from a horde, the dangerous state of the hospital.]
no subject
His neck burns. The wound is on his left side, partially obscured by a sweater, the rest a bandage. At least they'd gotten that much—
He inhales a bit sharper at the sound of her voice before turning to look at her. ]
I, um. I tried to. [ But not everyone. He wasn't the only one who got hurt; also, Suzuha... Mark can't help but try to look to her far side where something's missing before he abruptly fixes his gaze back on the woods before them, way too concentrated a stare for it to be anything but deliberate.
He pulls his knees tighter to his chest. ]
But what if I can't anymore? We've still got such a long way to go, and...
[ And he doesn't want to finish that thought, so, silence instead. ]
no subject
Being this close, it’s hard to miss the bandages peeking out from underneath his sweater when she glances his way. Suzuha can’t help but stare as an icy feeling of dread claws its way into her chest.
Oh.
That’s… that’s bad. Suzuha and Gojo both had the mad and desperate option to cut off the infection before it could hopefully spread, but Mark? What option was left for Mark, with a wound like that?]
We just… We have to keep trying.
[That’s all that’s left, isn’t it?]
If there’s even the smallest chance, we have to go for it. [She knows all about gambling everything for a slim opportunity, doesn’t she? And yet it had never felt this crushing to think about before, not quite.] It’s better than nothing. Better than giving up.
no subject
Maybe he is, actually. Not to hurt anyone else or deceive them; anyone who doesn't already know is probably going to by the end of the night. Just, just for himself.
Though as she speaks up he turns to look at her again. It's still awkward, he doesn't want to draw attention to— He meets Suzuha's eyes, doesn't look anywhere else. Just her eyes, still full of life, still here.
He's silent for a moment, and, ]
Yeah. [ It comes out as a shaky breath at first before he finds his footing again. ] Yeah. You're right.
[ ... Slight smile? Maybe? ]
I think that's the kind of thing I would have said, so. You know. Thank you for... being the one to actually say it.
[ His body relaxes a little, reassured. He lets go of his knees, lets himself stretch out a little again. It'll be okay; they'll be okay.
Although, speaking of... Is it worse to keep so deliberately acting like nothing else is wrong here? Mark doesn't look down at her side again, just tilts his head a little. ]
How about you? Are you doing okay?

But the injured ones, she's unsure whether to check on them or leave them alone. It's... tough to say what she'd prefer. But she wants to support them and in the end, Haru thinks she'd rather not be left alone, so when she comes across Mark, hears him mumble about how many he'd killed, she steps tentatively closer. With a wet cloth in her hands-- ]

relaxes.
Lets his shoulders slump again before turning to look up at her.
Makes a try at a smile. It's not even remotely convincing. ]
Haru... hey. Uh, [ he reaches for the cloth... he feels so shitty, this'll probably feel nice, actually. You know, when he needs it, which is right now. And after a couple of days he won't, ] thanks.
[ It feels lame to just say that, but he really doesn't know what else there is at this point. ]
no subject
[ And she definitely doesn't want to let any of their bite victims go it alone? Like, maybe they're all the type, but Mark has been so friendly and approachable with her that it feels wrong to just let him sit in his own fever and worries. ]

Shoko is, naturally, behind him more often than not, as the heavy-hitters and combatants clear the path for the rest of them, and each time she looks at him, and sees that burning bite, guilt lances through her. If only she'd been more careful at the start... Could they have avoided so much of the shit that went down afterwards? Auch's fall, Mark's infection... anything else that'll go wrong in here...
After gathering as many supplies as she can from this particular supply room, Shoko reemerges into the hallway, where she finds Mark mowing zombies down with seemingly little to no care. ]
Mark. [ can he even hear her amidst all the chaos. ] Mark!
no subject
A zombie approaches — too fast, but he's still fast, too, able to get the IV pole in its mouth as it lunges, ram it up and through its brain and out the back of its head. The zombie stops trying to get at him, effectively gone.
He hears her call his name again. ]
What? [ Oh, that came out harsher than he'd intended, but they aren't really in a place where there's time to apologize for that — not that the thought is on his mind for more than a second anyway. Not when everything still hurts so bad, when it shouldn't hurt like this. ] Did you get everything you need?
[ He doesn't bother turning around to look at her to address her — not when another zombie could come around the corner at any moment. ]
no subject
And for what it's worth, she's used to dealing with these kinds of strong personalities, anyway. It's why a mask slots into place for Shoko, steeling herself back into calmness, which he may not see but he might hear in her response, utterly devoid of its usual easygoing notes: ]
Yeah. Let's keep moving.
[ There's a set of double doors they need to go through, and maybe they can barricade it to keep the horde at bay, even if it'd only be a matter of time before they might break through that, too. But they have to try, and Shoko needs... a moment. Maybe they both do, even in the middle of all this. ]

By the time he puts it all aside, his bracelet is attached to Mark's. The soft metal "clink" of their connection heralding Puppy's massive form slotting in alongside him. ]
— █ YOU SCARED?
[ He bends down, practically bowing at the waist before lowering onto his knees inelegantly alongside the seated guy. A dull crash among the leaves as his mask blazes with that question: Hey Mark? Are you scared? ]
no subject
YOU SCARED? and he registers who's joined him. That there is no threat. That it's just Puppy, who only seems to want to look out for them, and is asking him...
Mark lifts his arm, as if that'll help Puppy get a little more comfortable, and stares down at the leaves Puppy is kneeling in for a moment. He doesn't want to look at that word. Scared. ]
I... don't know. [ He doesn't know, but he probably sounds scared. Mark looks back up at the mask, eyes narrowed in on that word. ] I should heal. But...
[ scared scared scared scared, is he scared, does he want to acknowledge that he's scared, ]
... what if I don't?
no subject
He doesn't shy away from the other's form, as if unafraid of the infection burning through him. Maybe he isn't afraid at all, really. ]
— █ WILL TRY
— █ SAVE YOU
[ Where their bracelets had come to link, Puppy tugs his wrist away so that he can slowly put his hand on Mark's shoulder. ]
