week 2

WEEK TWO

After allowing the party some time to rest at the stadium, it’s time to get a move on again. As per your mysterious benefactor’s (?) recommendation, the party will be splitting up into two groups, with one group traveling west to a hospital, and the other traveling east to a mall.

if you chose hospital...
To get to the hospital, characters will need to venture into more densely populated areas of Los Angeles – and that means they’ll be coming into contact with a higher amount of zombies. The hordes that roam here descend upon any living creature that makes too much noise, so you might witness an unlucky squirrel or cat get hunted down by these roaming threats. The bad news is that they’ll sprint full speed at you if they happen to catch sight – the good news is that they’re not very coordinated at pack hunting, and you may be able to outsmart them by weaving through the streets.

In a stroke of bad luck, Shoko Ieiri attracts the attention of a horde, forcing the party off considerably off course. Temporarily, hopefully. Detour!

Thankfully, there are several methods of getting to the front door of the location – parkouring atop or traversing inside connected buildings, for example. The zombies aren't the only thing that can kill you, though, if you're not careful; while traveling to the hospital, Auch Aubrey slips and falls to his death off a building. Remember Dr. Bei's warning, about not getting too far away from each other? The party will realize if they get too far away from his body (specifically the bracelet), it'll start feeling like their own bracelet is burning them at the wrist. Better go back — and either lug his body around, or lop off the bracelet somehow....

The area this group will travel through has many tourist attractions – antique stores, the Natural History Museum, old-school theaters, for example. For our sword wielders, there are some dated ones among the antique stores and museums; they're dusty, but they'll get the job done. There are other cool artifacts to "borrow" at these places, too, not to mention some history of what the world was like before all this happened.

And at the theaters? There's candy, DVDs, and cardboard cutouts from a variety of movies that were out when the fall of society came. Maybe there are minions there.

Once at the hospital, the party will find that there are a massive amount of zombies that have been trapped inside. Many are former patients or hospital staff, so several are wielding things like scalpels or crutches, and they are just smart enough to attack with them. To get around the facility to find the medical supplies you need, you’ll need to find a way to either distract the zombies, stealthily make your way around, or, you know, eliminate all of them.

As for scavenging, the hospital is surprisingly well stocked, as the high zombie count has made it hard to raid. Characters will be able to find bandages, medicine, surgical tools, and more, if they look close enough.

Of this group, Satoru Gojo and Mark Grayson are infected.

if you chose mall...
To get to the mall, characters will need to travel underground through the subway tunnels. None of the trains are in operation anymore, so they won’t be at risk of getting flattened – but the aged husks of the vehicles are still down here, rotting away. In some tunnels, it will be impossible to go around them, and you know the saying: sometimes the only way forward is through. Inside the trains, some doors that connect the cars are operational, while others are too rusted to move, forcing characters to climb atop the train to progress to the next car. It'll be a taxing trial, made worse by the fact that in these train cars, there are both regular corpses as well as zombified ones. The unpredictable nature of the functioning or non-functioning doors will making escaping the zombies difficult — characters will need to either stand their ground, or climb up to safety if they find themselves at a dead end.

Exiting the subways leaves one last test for this group: the stairs are collapsed! The light of outside shines through what is essentially a giant hole in the ceiling leading to street level. There's about a one story gap between the end point of the subways and the upper ground of the street, so characters will have to get creative with getting everyone up — using train cables? Throwing each other? Human pyramid?

Once at the mall just outside, the party will find that while there doesn’t seem to be a massive horde, there’s another problem: the first floor of the mall, which is below street level, is completely flooded. They’ll have to swim across the distance to the escalators, find a way to get across using debris, or some secret third thing. There are waterlogged zombies floating about in the water as well, who will swim violently towards you once they hear ripples in the water — they’re not subtle about going after you, and will thrash and splash and immediately let you know where they are. They're like people sized piranhas. Scary!

At one point, Sigewinne is pulled underwater by a zombie, and comes close to drowning.

As for scavenging, once they’ve scaled the escalator, they’ll find the second floor of the mall has definitely had its fair share of visitors, but there are still many useful things to find. There are electronic stores that have batteries and walkie talkies, clothing stores (like Hot Topic) that have some extra clothes lying about, and of course, the food court, where you’ll find canned and preserved foods from a variety of different cuisines.

Of this group, Suzuha Amane is infected.

rendezvous

After several days apart, characters will be able to meet back up at a spacious park in the northern part of the city. There are park ranger staff cabins that can be converted into temporary shelters with effort — and the area has a lightly wooded trail, which will make camping outside slightly more safe than if you were plain out in the open.

It’d be a good time to treat the wounded with the new medical supplies, and chow down on the food that’s been collected. Is there someone among the group who’s medical advice can be trusted? Is there someone who might be good at rationing or cooking the food? Everyone’s role in the party should start to become clearer.

There are probably a lot of things to discuss: what will you do with the infected? What's the deal with the bracelets? Reality of how dangerous this mission is will be setting in far too quickly.

Most annoyingly… after all that, some characters will find that moving north has caused their bracelets to inexplicably magnetize together at times, perhaps in response to everything that's happened. Due to this, you might need to help feed each other, or sleep next to a stranger. Hopefully you don't get stuck to someone you totally hate.

Suzuha-chan!!

[ Well, surely Suzuha wanted two worried girls crowding in, though similarly to Kotoha, Haru hesitates before her gaze lowers to the belt she's fumbling with. One-handedly.

She can at least help her with getting it free, which she does, mind racing. She's been bitten. That's... not good. How much time does she have before that... does the inevitable to her? How much time had the doctor had? Maybe it wasn't immediate if the doctor had been able to leave those messages for them, but at the same time, maybe it's different for everyone? ]

We--If there's a way to prevent the infection from spreading, but--

[ She has a bat. And a sad stick acquired from a fire prevention station because the actual sharp bit had been taken already. The frustration in her eyes is clear. ]

At the very least, maybe Sigewinne can assist with treating it...

[ Haru doesn't really want to bother him, but she also isn't fond of not being to find members of the group at an initial glance, especially ones who have been dealing with the aftermath of zombie bites, so she does go looking for him.

And finds him in the clearing, looking for all the world like he's meditating.

... And then he slams his fist into the ground and she startles, taking a quick breath through her mouth in the relative silence.

Oh. He's not doing so hot. ]

[ Haru's been running around, doing her best to... well, stay busy. If not, she has to think about it, about Suzuha's wound, about Kotoha providing her with the only other option they had, her hands tightening on the axe's handle as she'd brought it down and known that was vastly different from fighting monsters or chopping firewood.

But the injured ones, she's unsure whether to check on them or leave them alone. It's... tough to say what she'd prefer. But she wants to support them and in the end, Haru thinks she'd rather not be left alone, so when she comes across Mark, hears him mumble about how many he'd killed, she steps tentatively closer. With a wet cloth in her hands-- ]

Mark-san... I brought this for your head.

[The smarter thing to do is probably leave well enough alone and walk on by, and yet she finds herself compelled to pivot course when she spots Gojo in his one-handed struggle. She practically mirrors his state, her left arm similarly truncated from her own desperate measures after falling victim to a terrible bite. It’s not hard to recall the last conversation she had with this guy before the groups had split up days ago, seeing him now. Careful or reckless, these things they’re facing have proved to be an unreal threat; Suzuha can really see how this world fell into this state now.

That all gets left unsaid as she approaches, looking about as exhausted as she feels. Too much running around, desperate to keep busy ever since the groups converged to set up camp here.]

Let me hold it for you. [She crouches to reach out for the dropped can.] Together we’ve got one whole pair of good arms.

[A stupid attempt at humor that she doesn’t really feel, judging by the complete lack of her usual playful tone when joking around.]

I. food court
[ After breaking the door handle to one of the food court's storage rooms, Hella and you find yourselves amidst shelves and shelves of cans, boxes, and.... dust. Some of the cans are labelled, helpfully explaining each container's contents (corn, diced tomatoes, beans, nacho cheese, etc), but many more are unlabelled, leaving whatever's inside a mystery. ]

Well, we can't take all of it... fuck. [ She tosses her knapsack that she brought with her on the ground, setting her gloved hands on her hips. ] Do you have x-ray vision or something?
II. targét
[ She can also be found looting other stores — though noticeably in a much quieter, pensive mood, opting to go off on her own without a word to anyone. Right now, she's poking around in an abandoned mall Target, picking through the pharmacy section to see if there's anything of use left (there isn't), haphazrdly tossing trash out of her way left and right. Her lilac hair is still damp from the water in the first floor, but she shows no signs of complaint about the grime.

In fact, she seems... gloomy, if anything, a strange aura for a girl who is usually so feisty and boisterous. It's obvious enough that she's on edge, because if approached, she tenses, immediately grabbing her weapon, and only dropping it to her side with a frown when she sees that it's a fellow member of the party. Stubbornly, her head turns away, back to the task at hand. Regardless of the intents of her ally: ]

Why are you sneaking up on me? You could have said hello.
III. IT'S CORN! 🌽
[ If you have the (mis)fortune of being magnetized to Hella, you'll end up having to share a cold serving of canned corn with her, right out of the tin. She holds her spoon completely improperly, and because she's eating with her non-dominant hand, there's definitely some corn spilling on you as it travels her way. ]

This is not my fault! [ She huffs, right as another wet, goopy glob plops onto you. :( ] It's the fucking bracelet, okay?!
bicth: (pic#17160446)

[personal profile] bicth 2024-07-07 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What, so you can pass out on the ground by yourself and really become dead weight?

[ She keeps her hand outstretched despite the way the other girl seems to stubbornly want to hold on to the backpack. Pride is a dangerous thing, Hella's learned recently, but she's also learned that going off on someone isn't the way to solve it, either. She's just trying to give the other girl a reality check of what will happen if she continues on like this. With a sigh: ]

I didn't say you were helpless, dipshit. [ She's anything but, clearly. There's no pity to be seen in Hella's gaze — despite the hardened look she's receiving, and despite her own bluntness, it's clear she's not looking down on her. ] Now, give it.
bicth: (pic#17160425)

[personal profile] bicth 2024-07-07 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...

[ She agrees, her face falling slightly. Although she's understandably shocked from everything that happened, all this situation has done is feed her growing animosity towards the woman who brought them here. Her brows furrow. ]

I was thinking we should.... try to find stuff. For Suzuha.
bicth: (pic#17160431)

[personal profile] bicth 2024-07-07 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn it... just means I'll have to keep looking.

[ She's pretty determined to find them, mostly because of what she'd asked Shoko to get for her in return at the hospital. ]

I can catch up on it later, though. Food's the biggest priority. [ She tugs at her beanie with her free hand, pulling it down further onto her forehead, as if tucking a bit of herself away. With that, she beckon Haru along so they can make way to their next destination. ] What was that you were saying about growing vegetables?

[Suzuha is in the process of sheepishly scouting out the crew lingering around the main part of the camp, wondering who would be least embarrassing to ask help with getting some food prepped when she begins feeling an insistent tug from her bracelet. She lets it pull her along for a moment before she really clocks what is happening, and then she suddenly finds herself face-to-face with Haru, bracelets latched together.

Oh. Well.]

It’s— It’s fine. Not your fault.

[Is she talking about the bracelets or the arm? It doesn’t really matter.]

[ Only two? Too bad, now there's three, though at least the third is a bit smaller than the other two and therefore not taking up as much space.

They're all close enough that it's not too difficult for her to pick up on the mention of her name drifting through the air but even if they hadn't, her priority right now is to check up on everyone after the chaos that had been the flooded mall floor and make sure everyone is, if not okay, then the best they can be under the circumstances.

Unfortunately, "best" in this case is a pretty low bar.

So here's Sigewinne, looking like a drowned rat with clumps of hair still sticking to her, face face paler than normal as makes her way over. Like with Kotoha and Haru, concern is written clear on her face. ]

I'm so sorry. Because of me...

[ Well, no time for that now. She shakes her head, gently slaps both cheeks, and refocuses her attention. Suzuha still seems to be clear-headed, which is a good sign. ]

Good thinking, Suzuha. Kotoha, Haru, if one of you doesn't mind helping her tie the belt around her arm, about four inches above where she was bitten, that should help slow down any poison.

[ Slow but not stop, which is the real problem here. ]

Do we have any clean water? We should wash out the wound too, so it doesn't get infected by anything else.

[ She is not going straight to limb removal especially when Suzuha is a BABY, so someone else is going to have to suggest that first. ]

[Suzuha's willingness to jump into a dangerous situation she might not be able to endure reminds Ninety-Nine of someone else equally ready to intervene. It's someone she's promised to keep an eye on - because they, too, have a promise to fulfill to her.

She feels the same way about Suzuha recklessly persisting despite her injury: frustration, the urge to choke her until she rests more, and a confident little flourish of pride. Of course she'd have that kind of confidence and pride.
]

If you pass out, I'm probably the only one who can carry you a long distance. [That will slow them down. And she's already using cute mascot tote bags from the San*** store to carry a whole shopping trip's worth of goods. Yes, Ninety-Nine is assuming she's probably the most physically strong among them, not counting things like the giant woman Haru can apparently call into existence. It isn't ego, just practicality.] You should stay close to me.

1 / hospital
a. / big oops
[ One mistake is really all it takes, or maybe just incredibly bad luck. Try as they might to proceed as carefully and stealthily towards the hospital, one misstep is really all it takes, as Shoko tries to sneak past a horde behind an abandoned car with a defective sensor. Defective, as in extremely sensitive, and it's the blaring of its alarms that sets a nearby horde upon them. ]

...Fuck. Go. Go! We've gotta go!

[ Despite not being a combatant, herself, Shoko seems prepared to wield a baseball bat she's been carrying around - one that's adorned with a sticker of her face. ]

b. / gathering supplies
[ Perhaps her bad luck in disturbing a horde could have been forgiven, but to Shoko, there's no escaping how much one early mistake has already cost them, how it's set off a deteriorating chain events. The realistic side of Shoko that knows that shit happens and the side of her that doesn't want to have to stare down at another peer's lifeless features are at odds with one another, even as they finally carry out their main objective.

With some of the party holding zombies at bay, Shoko naturally tasks herself with gathering medical supplies. Bandages, dressings, antiseptics, painkillers, the list goes on, and she's acting on pure adrenaline in the supply room, trying to make short work of this without sacrificing attentiveness. ]

Hey. We're gonna need these.

[ She holds out a box full of cold packs... with an arm that's not entirely unscathed, itself, sporting an unightly gash from a scalpel-armed zombie while fighting their way into this room. She doesn't seem to care... They have to make this trip worth it, and her own pain comes second, third, somewhere else entirely.

After all, they can't let things get any worse than they have. ]

2 / rendezvous
a / smoke break
[ ... So it got worse!

Worse enough that, after deciding that the other medics can assist anyone who needs attention - at least for the time being - Shoko sits hunched over on a bench, away from the shelters, staring listlessly at a long-overgrown planting bed. A bandaged arm moves to lift a lighter with a shaking hand, at last lighting the cigarette she's kept unlit on her for all of a week. A week. ]

b / the clinic is open
[ But the work never really ends in these times such as these. Shoko helps set up something of a makeshift clinic in one of the shelter, where she's asked everyone to deposit all of the medical supplies they managed to obtain during the cursed hospital run. Strewn about a table within are supplies to make sure everyone's stocked on first aid necessities, and some surgical tools, including a peculiar-looking saw.

Whether someone enters to have their injury checked by her or to check on her, she's trying very hard to continue as she had the prior week, offering a wave and smile in greeting. ]

Hey. Need something?

[ Hopefully their bracelets won't misbehave during this check-up. ]

I can climb a rope. Can everyone else? We could bring some of it with us.

[Ninety-Nine hasn't seen Kotoha's powers in action yet, so she doesn't know exactly what the ability entails. She's really only thinking of what they might be able to bring with them, not that it might be less strenuous on Kotoha's already exhausted vocal cords.

She looks around at the cavernous terminal.
] Are there cables here? Wire. [She needs something sharper... anything to make cutting up all the things they need to slice easier.]

[ Shoko, for her part, wouldn't necessarily say that anything is really going well at all. She doesn't have the same sort of resilience that Gojo has in these circumstances, given her lack of combat experience. It was her mistake that had necessitated a detour, that called a horde onto them so early on, that got Mark infected, and another of their own lost entirely.

When it comes to facing the horrors of treating those injured by their own dangerous missions, having to examine the bodies of sorcerers she once knew... Shoko's heart steels in those moments. But here, in the midst of everything...

...Having Gojo is a blessing. Even if he's not quite such an endless font of cursed energy, he's still strong, and he can take care of himself, and—

Shoko! I need you!

—he's... hurt. Badly, because she knows he can handle anything less, yet still, even after hearing his voice, she hopes and hopes and hopes it's not a bite. She knows she can't heal one, after trying with Mark. So please, not a bite— ]

Gojo—!?

[ She doesn't even think twice, from the moment her fears are shown to be the reality, to meet him, her eyes widening at the gash at his arm, the burn that surrounds it. ]

How— Shit. Let's get you away from here—

[ it got through Limitless is how; she doesn't need to ask to know, so she won't. Now is when her own strength serves, now is when she needs to do what she was trained to do. Shaking her head, Shoko positions herself to bring his good arm around her shoulders to help him move. ]

I can't help you until we're out. We're almost there, so just— deep breaths, okay?

[It feels like all at once she’s surrounded by worried faces, something that’s somehow both suffocating and relieving all at once. Causing the others worry is the last thing she wants to do, but her own worry is mounting by the second. Yet on the other hand, having everyone so close makes the world feel a little bit smaller; it’s less to focus on, so it’s easier to focus.

She’s grateful when Haru helps her get the belt the rest of the way free, because now that she’s keenly aware of how badly messed up her arm is, the pain is hitting in earnest. The girls gathered around her get an uneasy (and fleeting) attempt at a smile from her before her eyes drift shut for a moment, teeth grit, and she tries to keep her arm as still as possible for them to get that belt wrapped in place. Just, stay calm. Think, focus.

That focus slips a little the moment infection is brought up. That’s the kicker, isn’t it? Whether it’s a sickness or a poison or anything else, it’s there, in that wound, in her blood. There’s no undoing that.

God, she feels sick.]

Water, um— [Right, something to latch onto instead of the panic that’s beginning to mount. She sucks in a breath through clenched teeth, trying to keep steady.] Backpack, over by the escalator. Should be, uh— some, some bottles in there.

[Which almost feels like a waste, considering their supply situation, but there’s not exactly the luxury of choice right now.]

How...

How could this have happened? So soon, so fast--and to the person that was most prepared out of all of them?]

R-right! I'll grab it.

[She sets off at a run, lips pressed together tightly. Backpack, by the escalator. Grab the water. Focus on one thing at a time, pretend like Suzuha is going to be fine, pretend like you've never seen any zombie movies in your life, Kotoha, and that you don't know how this is all going to pan out.

She'll be back with the water soon.]

subway

[ Here again. He really hoped he would never be here again. It's a different station, of course; none of the destinations on the signs are places he's been, and none of the dirty walkways are ones he's walked down. Standing in the filthy interior corridor of a derelict subway car, hearing shuffling footsteps and grunts and groans that are only only nearly human - he's been here before. The familiar stink of corpses fills his nostrils, and only a learned tolerance of it keeps him from dry heaving where he stands.

He's wrenched open the door to the next car with a rusty pipe. It was jammed shut with rust and unidentifiable debris, but he managed to open it. Henry stands back to let everyone else pass through, both out of politeness and an understanding that they're all much stronger than him - but as the last person goes ahead of him, he hesitates at the threshold, lifting an unsteady hand to his temple. His skin's gone pale, and he very much looks like he's about to throw up. ]

We can't swim through that...

[ so Henry declares as they stand at the precipice of the escalators, staring tiredly at the expanse of opaque brown water between them and the way to the next floor. It's not just that it's filthy, although that's also a concern - it's the fact that they can't see through it. The bloated bodies floating at the surface are as still as the rest of the litter dotting the water, but he doesn't believe for a second that they're truly gone.

Time for some creative problem-solving!! ]

[ The whole ordeal was harrowing enough, but the fact that they made it through without someone actually dying to the creatures was incredible enough. When Sigewinne had gone under, Leontuzzo had been sure that was it...

That Suzuha hadn't allowed it to be was nothing short of a miracle, as was the fact that she was still here with them, trucking through all of this.

Pushing herself might not be the best thing for her right now, but the wound had been patched up as well as something that devastating could be, and right now he suspected the mental scars were probably heavier on her than anything else.

He won't tell her to stop what she's doing right now, because sometimes a distraction is the thing most needed, but he will hold one finger up to his lips for a moment as he unholsters one of guns.

[ This is really when she thinks, oh. Someone like their leader should have been here. Or Makoto, their strategist, their tactician, who always had several solutions on hand. Here, it's just Haru, who wants to be as supportive as she can, but similarly, she's seen zombie movies, she knows how this goes.

... But she doesn't want to believe that, not in this moment, because surely there were other ways and as she follows Sigewinne's instructions and ties the belt slightly above the bite marks, Haru takes a deep, steadying breath. Not right now. No panicking. Suzuha must be terrified, more than all of them. ]

It's... it's all right. [ It's not. But it could be worse. They're not fending off zombies at the same time. ] Let's think this through.

[ And it's... there, she realizes, looking down at the belt tightly applied to Suzuha's arm. There's an option, but suggesting it sounds...
