WEEK 1

WEEK ONE

!
the beginning of the end

That’s what’s playing on repeat on a tape recorder, when the survivors come to.

Characters will find themselves in a humble, American townhouse, which other than being a bit dusty, is still mostly clean. All characters will be sprawled out on the floor and furniture of the living room, in front of what looks to be a giant portal. Characters will also notice they have a seemingly indestructible silver wristband around their wrists, and they have nothing with them but the clothes on their back.

Take a look around, and you'll realize that everyone in the room is likely a stranger. Aside from the tape playing, there's little explanation or proof that what's being said to you is even true. For all you know, one of the people in the room could be responsible for you being suddenly taken here.

Exploring the house's many rooms will reveal that there are small stockpiles food, water, weapons (a few guns, a few bats, a few knives), and maps, along with a large, strange container of blue liquid. The maps all chart a route from Los Angeles to San Francisco, and sport detailed recommended time stamps on them. Strangely, the recommended path occasionally diverges into two separate routes.

Upon searching the house, Haru Okumura finds a set of notes, while Leontuzzo Bellone finds a separate set. They are free to keep these notes to themselves, or share them with the group.

Nothing has anyone's names on it — not the notes, and certainly not the supplies. Everyone will have to compete for the same things. Or maybe all of you can be civilized about this, before anyone goes hoarding weapons and food? Maybe you can even introduce yourselves, while you're at it. For some strange reason, every window and door in this place is locked (and impossible to break), and will be for at least 72 hours, as if someone wanted you all to be cooped up together for a time before heading out.

Most interestingly, in the deepest basement of the house, there's a room with a large, heavy dresser shoved in front of it… and a low moaning and banging emanating from the other side. The door’s slightly ajar, and a closer look reveals a zombie is the source of the sound. Context clues around the basement, like the PhD in interdimensional travel hung up on the wall (for a Dr. Bei), hint that the woman inside is whoever left you this cryptic message - the woman who brought you here, allegedly. But she's long long gone, only this monster left in her wake. It seems she was smart enough to lock herself away to prevent you from being harmed, at least... and it'll give you a preview of the threat that looms outside.
sewer diving
After 72 hours have passed, one and only one door unlocks – in the very same basement that the zombie of Dr. Bei can be found. It leads down to a dark, dingy tunnel that connects to the sewers. Not only is the smell awful, but (non-infected) rats scurry about, keeping to the shadows – but the smell of any of the food you've taken from the house will attract them. Careful!

The party will need to create some light to navigate their way out and keep the rats at bay, or they’ll be bumping around in the dark for quite a while. Now might be a good time to share if you have some matches, or a special talent for being a lantern. Mercifully, there's only one exit that actually opens down in this labyrinth, as if it's a route the Doctor designed to take all the time.

At one point, Puppy falls into the sewage, and loses something they brought from the house.

oh! that's a baseball

Once characters make it out of the sewers, they’ll be a day’s travel to the first mark on the party’s map: “Dodger’s Stadium.” The road they’ll have to hike to get there is winding, curvy, and uphill, which will give the party a good overview of the now dilapidated Los Angeles, along with the many abandoned buildings and cars that litter the place. The stadium itself looks to have been cleared of threats and fashioned into a safe spot a long time ago, as all entrances but one have been completely welded shut. The high walls keep zombies out, and the winding path up here deters most of them from even approaching.

Inside the stadium, there’s some baseball merch (and equipment) to scavenge, not to mention some really old peanuts! Delicious. Maybe there are even some old fireworks laying around this place. Setting up camp here won’t be very comfortable… but at least it’s very safe. A luxury the party won’t have for much longer, if the map is anything to go by. You'll be heading through the city, next, so rest up while you can.

!

[ She's going to make him say it, but he still doesn't want to. ]

Remember that time last summer my ice pop melted right off the stick and fell on the ground? Godddd. That was so sad...

[ ...But you know he had to get a little shitposting in first. His gaze drifts away, distant. ]

Or maybe to go back and save Amanai.

[ And in so doing, save Suguru. It isn't the first time he's entertained the notion, of what he would have done differently that day. If he would have had the prowess to defeat Zenin without awakening to his true power, and would he have been able to do that without Riko's death? Maybe it would be enough to go back to the aftermath and just...stop Suguru from spiraling. For each and every time Satoru asked him what was wrong and he insisted nothing was, to instead hold him close and insist that he talk.

Would it make any difference? Maybe not. But the fact that he didn't try more...that he let his own training cloud what was right in front of him...

There's nothing he wouldn't try to change that outcome. ]

Make it? Well, hey, that’s some serious skill.

[She is picturing something very straightforward here.]

Definitely won’t say no to that if you can make it happen.

[That sounds like they haven't seen each other in some time, suggesting that their fates are inextricably linked somehow. Reiju files the thought away to focus on the supplied descriptions, which, though vague at first, ring a faint bell altogether.

Now it boils down to the unstated color.
]

I saw a girl with lilac hair earlier. She was searching for food in one of the rooms.

Nice to meet you too! And yeah, I am.

[ Brief pause, like it's only just dawned on him that not everybody here might be. ]

Uh, I guess you're not...?

[ he's doing great ]

[ And right back to Suzuha! ]

Oh, yeah. [ But instead of doing a proper loop-de-loop — since they're in a locker room, and there's only so much room — he does more of a flip, turning himself upside-down before righting himself again with no effort, like it's too easy for him. ] You need anything from me, I've got you covered.

[ Hell yeah optimism!! They're all gonna get through this just fine. ]

Um. [ ... ] A little? I mean, it's not that bad...

[ does he get credit for admitting to some discomfort ]

[ ... There's a bit of a pause before he looks away, at a completely unremarkable part of the floor.

And, quietly: ]
Yeah.

[ Oh. Mark blinks, resets himself at her change in mood. Did he say something right? Is he convincing—

Maybe not. He's really not sure what to make of her questioning right now, so Hella gets an off-kilter sort of honesty, like he really doesn't know how to answer her so she's getting everything unfiltered. ]

I mean... I think most people are doing the best they can. And uh, I help the cops sometimes, so... I don't know if that means I sound like one. Do I really?

[ somebody hasn't heard of acab yet so this might be a compliment?? ]

[ In another life... That invites a thoughtful look as he gazes up at her. He's known for most of his life that he was going to inherit his dad's powers, which meant he would become a superhero, and therefore a professional athlete probably wouldn't be in the cards for him. It'd be like cheating? But maybe in another life, a... lot of things wouldn't have happened to him.

No. That's neither here nor there. Mark stares at Suzuha's offered hand for a moment before reaching out to take it with his free one, letting her help him back to his feet. ]

Yeah. [ There's no other life; there's just what he knows and what's ahead of them, so he shoots her an easy grin. ] When it gets your blood pumping you know it's good, right? Watching the pros is fun, but there's nothing like doing it yourself.

[ A beat. ]

Maybe you can keep playing, after all this. No reason why not, right?

[ not only does he not know a thing about where she came from but, what the future has in store,, ]

[personal profile] titlecard 2024-07-08 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh! This is all good, then. Mark relaxes as he sees where Hella's more dismissive attitude came from, takes a moment to stretch his arms out a little himself. Not that carrying her caused any strain or whatever, but when in Rome, right? ]

You know, I probably need a raise too. [ Easy grin at the thought. But also like. He probably does.

But also he's smiling because Hella's don't-give-a-shit attitude is kind of infectious? It's nice to be around someone so outspoken and confident — she's almost kind of like Rex in that sense, except not a jerk. ]

But yeah, I'm game. What makes a Sinner a Sinner?

[ Since she likes the term, is proud of it, then of course he's gotta know more! ]

Fighting is what I know and what I'm good at. I was made to destroy. Tear things down without thinking - they perfected it with me. [Then they could harvest her blood into crystalized Mania and spread it like a creeping fire to hungry gang members and desperate men. Despite what she'll tell Shoko at another time about wondering if she can be useful in other ways, it's difficult for Ninety-Nine to see herself in any other way.]

When it comes to it, I'm also good at hunting things down. The smell of your blood, the sound of your footsteps... I could track you even if you got far away from the group.

[That might also explain why she's having an easier time than some of them navigating the sewers too. In addition to being acclimated to darkness, Ninety-Nine's other senses have less difficulty tracking the others' movements around her. She can keep track of where most of them are without even having to look.]

I understand.

[ maybe not mark's specific circumstances that lead to that fear, but soujuurou understands that all humans have the capacity to inflict pain beyond any imagination. his hands twitch and his nostrils flare as he sucks in breath. ]

But, you can put that fear to good use. It can guide you if you can stand with it and not try to suppress it.

...

I don't think we want to find out one way or the other.

[ he doesn't know either, but it's the sort of demented thing aozaki would do so he just assumes dr. bei might be the same way. ]

Aha, the environment itself has been fine. Socializing is where I've been struggling the most. I've never been around or talked to so many people.

[ he's a lot better at it now than he was upon arriving, but at school he still struggles at times to relate to anyone else. in an interesting twist of fate, the survivalist scenario they're all in is a lot more familiar and easier to navigate. ]

If we ever get a chance, I'd like to see you in action. Your life sounds interesting for a person who grew up in a city.

A powerful person who brags about their superiority. I'm unfortunately familiar with that sort of attitude.

[ he's glad aozaki isn't here. her and gojo might end up killing each other with their overinflated egos clashing. ]

Do you wish you were sent out more, or are you just concerned for when he comes back?

Pacifist. [ he repeats the word a little low, shoulders sagging, before answering her. ] I'll be ok. Our goal isn't to fight the sick people, so we should avoid it when we can.

If I have to raise my hands to protect others, then I won't hesitate to do so. I promise that much.

[ soujuurou didn't understand anything. ]

[ She has yet to go into just how interesting her life has become, but you know. It's fine. It will come up when it comes up. ]

Yes, of course! I... imagine a lot of us will be in action before too long. [ Imagine. ]

But for what it's worth, Shizuki-kun, I don't think you've been particularly awkward with your socialization here.

... Probably! We'll have to test it out. I've never tried making ammo that's used in an actual gun before.

It's probably fine. Nice to know we've got some people who are super skilled with firearms with us though.

Well--alright. You sound pretty sure of yourself, so I'm not going to doubt you over something like this.

I'm worried more for you than the others here, but... it's nice you wanna protect everyone, too.

Ahaha, no way. I don't wanna get killed out there, too...

[ 'Too,' because, well. Sorcerers don't exactly have a long life expectancy, a fact of which they've been reminded, as of late. ]

I might have been worried before, I guess. But Gojo figured out the same technique I use to heal people, but for himself, so I guess he doesn't really need me anymore~

[She wasn't expecting anything else to break the silence and didn't think there was anything particularly special about her words, so Ninety-Nine's head jerks slightly in response, lifting her gaze from the tight access pathway in front of them.]

I just want to live freely. You get used to the pain so you stop feeling it. You get used to running, to being treated a certain way, resigning yourself to an outcome. Other people are the ones who can see if you're capable of more.

[ He can put that fear to good use... Has anyone told him anything like that before? His mom, Eve, Cecil? He's quiet for a moment, thinking it over, but he can't remember. ]

Well, I'm from Baltimore. It's on the east side of the country, right next to the capital. Where's Sakurashin?
